Recently, news began to leak that Disney and Sony have come to a disagreement about the future of the Spider-Man franchise in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Fan outrage has been at an all time high, with many blaming Sony for this dilemma, and a growing number blaming Disney for it as well. The simple story is that Disney wants more of the profits from Spider-Man while contributing more to its development, while Sony does not. The longer story is much more complex, and an interesting topic for today. Ultimately, I’m going to side with Disney on this however, and I think it’s important to talk about why I am doing this.

For starters, let’s try to paint a more accurate picture of what is going on. First off, remember that this is all based on leaked information. Everything being talked about online is inherently going to be slightly wrong in some way, simply because we just don’t have the exact details being put out. That said, there are a few things we do know with fairly high certainty:

  1. Sony and Disney made a deal several years ago to have Spider-Man appear in several Marvel movies, and for Marvel to help out with the development of those movies and Spider-Man’s own movies. This was a temporary deal, and was rumored to be only for 2 Spider-Man movies and appearances in several Marvel properties.
